Matt Maruggi wins Distinguished Educator Award;

Alan Sickbert wins William B. Malevich Award

In a vote by students, Matt Maruggi, program director of the Tutor-Mentor Program, won the 2002 Distinguished Educator Award, and Dr. Alan Sickbert, interim director of the Center for Student Leadership, Activities and Living, won this year's William B. Malevich Award.

In the nominating essay submitted by a student, Maruggi was described as "a very inspirational educator who genuinely cares about all of his students."  He offers a "type of service learning" through his involvement in the Tutor-Mentor program and "provides his students with an opportunity to learn in ways that cannot be taught in the classroom."

Sickbert's "tireless dedication to the students of St. Thomas" was mentioned in the student essay for his William B. Malevich Award nomination.  He was described as "an asset to the community of St. Thomas in countless ways for the past 15 years."  Sickbert has served in numerous capacities that have ranged from adviser of Omicron Delta Kappa and All College Council, to Dean of Students and interim director of the Center for Student Leadership, Activities and Living.
